The Music Production Academy of Chapel Hill is a specialized program designed for middle and high school students who are eager to learn the basics of music production. The academy provides a hands-on learning environment where students can explore various aspects of producing music, including digital audio workstations, sound engineering, and creative songwriting through private or group lessons. The curriculum is tailored to suit beginners and those with some experience, ensuring that all participants gain valuable skills in music technology and production. Through engaging projects and mentorship from experienced instructors, students have the opportunity to develop their talents and passion for music in a supportive and innovative setting.

Fall/Spring Offering

Music Production 101

This 11-week group lesson is open to students in 6th - 12th grades and is designed to immerse students in the evolving world of music technology. Students explore the fundamental elements, terminology, and concepts of music production. It provides an overview of music software, sequencing, basic MIDI, MIDI controllers, recording, audio editing, and mixing. This experience lays the groundwork for students interested in exploring the technical and creative aspects of producing music, equipping them with essential skills for further exploration and development in the field.

Format

Each group lesson will begin with a 20-minute introduction to a specific topic in music production, giving students a solid foundation for the day’s subject. Following this, students will participate in hands-on activities, either independently or in groups, to apply the concepts they've just learned through small assignments. During this time, the instructor will provide individual guidance and support, ensuring that each student can progress at their own pace. Throughout the course, students will also work on a larger, ongoing project, both during lessons and at home, which will incorporate all the skills and knowledge gained throughout the course. This comprehensive project will culminate in a final piece of music that each student will present at the last meeting.

Course Materials

Each student is required to bring a laptop with an approved music software program and a pair of over-the-ear headphones.

About the Instructor

Clay Stevenson has been the Coordinator of Music Production and Recording Arts and a Lecturer in Music at Elon University since 2011. He holds a Master of Music in Media Writing and Production from the University of Miami (FL) and a Bachelor of Music Education from Old Dominion University. In addition to his extensive experience in commercials and music production, Clay has taught K-8 general music and choir in public and private schools across Virginia, Florida, and California. He is certified to teach K-12 general music and choir and has earned certifications in Apple’s Logic Pro and Audiokinetic’s Wwise software. Clay currently resides in Carrboro with his wife, two children, and their energetic puppy.
